Looking on the optimistic side of climate change

Helping to inject positivity and optimism into the community’s understanding of climate change are the students of Drimnagh Castle Secondary School.

Forty Transition Year students have enrolled in the Rewrite 11-week programme.

Rewrite, the education arm of global decarbonisation firm CoolPlanet,  has partnered with Calor Ireland to sponsor the roll-out of the Rewrite climate education programme in schools within their community.

Topics covered included the carbon cycle, climate change, climate action and energy, while also examining the impact of climate change on industry such as fashion, forestry, food, waste and more.

Fergal Kelleher, a teacher at Drimnagh Castle Secondary School, said the programme perfectly complemented the climate and environmental modules and projects that the students were engaged in, providing a better understanding and grounding on the issues involved.

“They loved the accessibility and interactivity of the course, which allowed them to decide when to proceed and at what pace. Rewrite was a very positive and engaging experience, and one we wish to continue with,” he said.

Rewrite, launched in April 2021, has already made a significant impact in climate education, with nearly 160 post primary schools and more than 13,000 students enrolled.

The unique programme delves into the fundamentals of climate science while exploring various aspects of climate change affecting our daily lives. It combines engaging video content, animations, and quizzes to create an interactive and enjoyable learning experience. Furthermore, the programme offers self-directed online lessons alongside complementary offline assignments to enrich the educational journey.

One of Rewrite’s core philosophies is to infuse optimism and positivity into the understanding of climate change. Sonya Murray, Rewrite Schools Coordinator said: “We can’t change what’s been done in the past, but we can reimagine the future.”

By empowering teenagers to grasp their carbon footprint and explore climate solutions and innovations, Rewrite equips them with the tools and inspiration to usher in a brighter, more sustainable future.
