Louis enjoys success at the Penn Meet in Philadelphia

CLONDALKIN man Louis O’Loughlin was a key member of the Auburn Tigers team that won the College Men’s Distance Medley Relay at the 127th edition of the Penn Relays Meet at Franklin Field in Philadelphia last Friday.

The Donore Harriers middle-distance star ran the opening leg over 1,200m against athletes from 18 other teams.

He held the lead after the first of three laps covered in 59 seconds.

However, he got himself caught in a melee of athletes on the second circuit – and had to manoeuvre his way back to the front of the field.

A solid 58-second final lap saw him hand the baton to his team-mate Matthew Rainer in second position. O’Loughlin’s leg time was 2.58.24.

Rainer ran the 400m leg in 49.94, before a 1.52.75 leg by Rex Green for the 800m kept the team in contention.

The final leg over 1,600m was won out by Ryan Kinnane in 4.03.56 to record the win for the Auburn University quartet.

Only 3- tenths of a second separated the first 3 teams with Auburn timed at 9.42.46, Clemson University (South Carolina) closed in 9.42.62, and the Pitt Panthers (University of Pittsburgh) came 3rd in 9.42.76.
