LUCAN Sarsfields Under 15A hurlers had plenty to cheer about on Sunday after they secured the championship crown when they beat Kilmacud Crokes 0-15 to 0-9 in Abbotstown.

The Lucan boys had to fight tooth and nail for this win with their forward line registering scores at crucial times during the game.

Lucan Sarsfields Under 15A hurlers enjoyed championship success

Lucan started brightly with Joey Dunne pointing from play in the opening minute and he added another from a free on three minutes to help settle his side’s nerves.

Crokes opened their account on seven minutes with a free and it was nip-and-tuck for the first half with both sides trading scores and Lucan leading 0-7 to 0-5 on 23 minutes.

The best goal opportunity fell to Crokes in the opening half when they broke through the full back line on 25 minutes butt Cathal Doody pulled off a remarkable save and deflected the shot over the bar for a point.

Lucan responded with two good points after this from Liam Garrigan and Davey Mulqueen to lead 0-9 to 0-6 at half time.

The second half was very tense as both sides struggled to get on top in what was a close encounter. Two points from Joey Dunne and three points from Kilmacud had Lucan ahead 0-11 to 0-9 on 48 minutes.

Sarsfields needed to use all five of our substitutes from 40 minutes to 55 minutes into the game and this had a big bearing on the match.

Lucan got two more points from Joey Dunne (free) and Liam Garrigan on 19 and 21 minutes but Crokes stayed in touch and were testing the Sarsfields defence.

Two more points from Joey Dunne from frees on 23 and 27 minutes left the score at 0-15 to 0-9 as Lucan continued to resist the Crokes onslaught and closed it out without conceding the goal that Crokes really needed.

Cathal Doody in goals was deservedly selected as Man of the Match with a rock solid performance following his superb saves. Dunne accounted for 0-11 points while Liam Garrigan, Alex Hickey and Davey Mulqueen also found the target.
