Lucan light up Leinster Senior Sunday division with the league and cup double
LUCAN United’s senior men’s team celebrated the end of an outstanding season last week after they secured a historic league and cup double with the club, reports Rory Merriman.
Their success in the Leinster Senior Sunday First Division was emphatic, clinching the title with a remarkable 12-point gap between themselves and second place.
The Dublin 20 outfit suffered only two defeats throughout the league campaign, showcasing their dominant season guidance of manager Keith Baker.
The season’s crowning achievement was undoubtedly winning the Charlie Cattle Cup, where Lucan United displayed tenacity and skill to overcome St. Mochtas in a closely contested final.
The match concluded with a 2-1 victory, thanks to crucial goals from Luke Walsh and Marco Chindhea. Securing the league title was another high point for Lucan United, achieved with a dramatic 3-2 win against Bangor last week.
Remarkably, this success comes in only their second season at this level, a testament to the rapid progress and potential of the squad.
“All credit to the lads for the making of this season,” Lucan manager Keith Baker told The Echo.
“We were 9 points clear at the top at Christmas so we had that confidence in us all season I think,” he added.
“ I couldn’t be happier for the lads.
“We’re a young squad, mainly between 21-25 with a few older heads, but we really pushed on and got the job done this season, this season only being our second consecutive year in this division.”
Looking ahead, manager Keith Baker has set his sights on new challenges, expressing a clear ambition to push for the Intermediate Cup next season.
“We’re going to push on next season and set our sites in the intermediate cup.
“Couldn’t be happier with this season,” Baker concluded.
