A COMPREHENSIVE display by Lucan Sarsfields saw them capture the Minor Football League Division One title in style with a 2-18 to 0-3 win over Na Fianna at Mobhi Road.

The title challenge went down to the wire with Sarsfields needing a win on the final day after second-placed Ballyboden St Enda’s received a walkover from Thomas Davis.

And their quality again shone through last week to see them over the line.

The 12th Lock outfit came out guns blazing with Matt Dunne posing a real threat to the Na Fianna backline, kicking two early frees as they got their scoring underway.

The forward added his third moments later and combined with Alan Lynch and the brilliant Cian Buckley, who was later named man of the match, to see Lucan to a 0-10 to 0-1 lead by the interval.

The Drumcondra side struggled to keep up with the high-tempo that Sarsfields set with workhorses Henry Keogh and Colm Behan in midfield.

Full back Derek Cahill and centre back Sean Casey dominated the exchanges in their third of the field, with Na Fianna snatching the rare score.

Substitute Brian Treacy drove through the opposition defence to finish low into the corner, doubling his side’s goals tally after Buckley netted to bring his personal account to 1-6.

Speaking after the game, Lucan Sarsfields manager David Cullen was ecstatic with his side’s displays throughout the campaign.

“We are delighted to win the league” he exclaimed. “At the start of year at Minor level you compete for two trophies and, while the championship is priority, winning the league is a great achievement for the lads.

“The players have trained and applied themselves very well to this point of the season and the strength of the squad clearly helped us at a time when all clubs are missing players.

“We will re-group and get ready for, what will clearly be, a very competitive championship” he added.

Lucan Sarsfields were pipped to the ‘B’ Championship title last year by Castleknock and are expected to start their quest to complete a league and championship double late into September.
