Lucky escape for OAP John as tree lands in front garden
By Aideen O'Flaherty
AN ELDERLY man got a shock when a tree fell into his front garden on Wednesday morning, as the powerful gusts caused by Storm Ali wreaked havoc around the county.
John McLoughlinn (87), from Avonbeg in Tallaght, had just gone back into his house after feeding the birds, as he does every morning, when he heard a loud noise.
“I heard this big crack noise, and when I looked out the window there were branches everywhere,” said Mr McLoughlinn
The large tree hadn’t been able to withstand the gale force winds that Storm Ali brought, and was just one of numerous instances of trees falling and debris being whipped into the air by the effects of the storm.
Dublin Bus had a number of diversions on their routes, including the 15, 120, 40, 67, 13 and 67 bus routes, on Wednesday as a result of fallen trees.
Marian Road in Rathfarnham was closed in both directions as a result of fallen cable lines, while Ballyroan Library was temporarily closed due to a power outage in the area.
South Dublin County Council’s customer care team received over 160 calls on Wednesday relating to Storm Ali, with the local authority dispatching crews to clear branches and fallen trees.
