Man assaults security guard at service station

A MAN who assaulted a security guard after the guard retrieved a bottle of oil that the man had taken has been ordered to pay his victim two weeks salary by Tallaght District Court.
Shane Geoghegan had originally pleaded not guilty to the case was before Judge Patricia McNamara for hearing but he changed his plea on the hearing date.
Geoghegan, aged 27, with an address at Rowlagh Crescent, Clondalkin, pleaded guilty to assaulting the named male at Applegreen Service Station, Jobstown, Tallaght, on July 23, 2017.
Garda Andrew Dunne told Judge McNamara that at 10.15pm on the above date, he responded to a call at Applegreen Service Station in Jobtown.
He said that an ambulance from Dublin Fire Brigade was treating a security guard from Applegreen who had been assaulted.
Garda Walsh said that at 9.55pm on the above date, Geoghegan and another male had entered Applegreen and were acting suspiciously in the car accessories area of the shop.
The garda said that Geoghegan and the other male were observed taking a one litre bottle of motor oil and walking out to their car without paying for it.
Garda Walsh said the security guard followed the pair out of the shop and retrieved the bottle of oil.
He said that as the security guard was walking back to the shop, Geoghegan hit him to the side of his head with his fist.
Garda Walsh said Geoghegan was later identified from CCTV footage. He said the security guard had suffered a stiff neck and pains to his head.
Garda Walsh said the ambulance men told the security guard to go to A and E if his symptoms got worse. He said the security guard was off work for two weeks and was down €1,100 in wages for the two weeks.
Geoghegan’s counsel, Stephen Montgomery Bl, said his client had offered to pay €500 in compensation.
Garda Walsh said Geoghegan had 51 previous convictions and had received a three-year sentence for assault causing harm.
Judge McNamara told Mr Montgomery that the injured party had lost two weeks wages. She said it was a serious offence and noted that Geoghegan already has a three year sentence for assault.
She ordered Geoghegan to pay his victim €1,100 in compensation and remanded him on continuing bail to a date in November for payment of the compensation and for sentencing.
