Man tried to avoid garda checkpoint receives 4 months suspended sentence

A MAN who tried to avoid a garda checkpoint received a four-month suspended sentence for no insurance in Blanchardstown District Court.

Judge David McHugh also put Stephen Dempsey off the road for two years.

blanchardstown courthouseDempsey, aged 42, with an address at Bawnlea Drive, Tallaght, pleaded guilty to having no insurance and no driving licence at Belgard Road in Tallaght on May 8, 2018.

Sergeant Geraldine McManigan told Judge McHugh that on May 8 last, a grey BMW driven by Dempsey was seen driving away from a garda checkpoint.

She said Dempsey was later stopped by the gardai and he chose to produce his driving licence and insurance at Tallaght Garda Station but failed to do so.

Sgt McManigan said Dempsey had 16 previous convictions.

Dempsey’s solicitor said his client had been giving a friend a lift and should not have driven.

Judge McHugh sentenced Dempsey to four months jail, suspended for two years and banned him from driving for two years.
