Match of the Week: Lucan United march on in cup

LUCAN UNITED advanced to round two of the LFA Junior Cup, after they travelled to Sandymount to face Harding IF FC and bagged a 5-0 win in a comprehensive display.

United ticked all the boxes on the day and after only 11 minutes had built up a 2-0 lead, after they hit the ground running.

Harding were shell shocked, and by the time they gradually got a grip on the game they were 3-0 down.

In fairness they never gave up the chase but, on the day, they just faced a side that has almost every position covered with players battling for a place.

As stated, two goals in the opening 11 minutes had United well in control, as Brandon O’Halloran slotted home into an empty net, after Tom Kane drew the keeper before setting him up.

That was quickly followed by number two from Ryan Hyland, when his shot was too powerful for keeper Timo Van Meyer to prevent it from entering the net.

This game looked dead in the water after 20 minutes, as a four man move involving O’Halloran, Clayton Harte and Leo Meyers combined to present Kane with a chance he was never going to miss.

Now I don’t know if they relaxed at that stage or if Harding finally woke up but, whatever it was, the home side started to make a game of it.

Unfortunately they didn’t create any real clear cut chances and Lucan keeper Jay Behan was hardly tested, but at least it looked more of a game.

Wholesale changes from the visitors as the game progressed into the second half and you could tell that the substitutes wanted to impress the management, as the work rate was ramped up again.

Two more were to follow from Ewan O’Halloran and Kane to make it a comfortable day at the office for Lucan, who strolled into the second round and could go a long way.

While it’s back to league action for Harding, and they can be sure that they might not face a side as clinical in front of goal as the season progresses.
