McDonagh’s energy sees him to victory in debut
DYLAN McDonagh turned in a fine performance to ensure his professional boxing debut was a winning one, beating Bulgarian Georgi Andonov on the Celtic Clash 3 card in the National Stadium last Saturday.
The Tallaght man has a background in Mixed Martial Arts and was taking his first steps into the competitive boxing ring for this super-bantamweight clash at 32.
Yet while he might be somewhat raw in this discipline, he possessed the speed and fitness to see off the challenge of the Eastern European rival who has now shipped five defeats in his eight pro contests so far.
“My instructions were to go in there and just try to get on top of him” McDonagh told The Echo.
“I had the energy to go for the four rounds and I felt strong.
“I came in well under the weight at 118 pounds, but I still felt good and stronger than him [Andonov],” he added.
McDonagh, who fights from Westside Boxing Club under coach
Frank Stacey and is signed with Boxing Ireland Promotions, expects to be back in the ring well before the year is out and could possibly drop down to bantamweight for his next bout.
