Met Eireann issues snow warning for St Patrick’s weekend

Met Eireann has issued a Status Yellow weather warning this morning (Friday) as low-temperatures and snow-showers are expected over St Patrick’s weekend.
AA Roadwatch has recommended motorists to drive carefully over St Patrick’s weekend, with particular care needed from Saturday evening.

Met Eireann has said that during St Patrick’s Day there will be scattered rain showers at first, which will then turn to sleet and snow throughout the day.
Although there will be some sunny spells during St Patrick's Day, temperatures in the afternoon will only be 1 or 2 degrees and there will be strong winds.
The snow is expected to be minimal but the combination with route disruptions has resulted in AA Ireland advising motorists to take extra precautions over the weekend.
The weather warning is valid until Sunday night.
“Met Eireann have stressed that any snowfall we see this weekend will be minor in comparison to what we saw during Storm Emma, but it’s still something that road users will need to be aware of.
“Given the weekend that’s in it you’re likely to see more people taking longer journeys as they enjoy a weekend away, more kids on the roads as they attend festivals and, unfortunately, a greater risk of drink-drivers on the road,” said Conor Faughnan, AA Director of Consumer Affairs.
Particularly dangerous for cyclists
He stressed that this weekend could be “particularly dangerous” for cyclists and pedestrians.
Faughnan added: “If you’re planning a trip away this weekend then we recommend giving your car a quick once over before you leave, including checking your tyres and oil levels, to help reduce your breakdown risk.
AA Rescue will also be making additional resources available in anticipation of an increase in car breakdowns.
