A FREE self-help course is taking place in Tallaght this April for people of all ages who suffer from migraines.

Hosted by the Migraine Association of Ireland, the self-help course will take place in the Maldron Hotel, Tallaght, over a course of three evening sessions on April 5, 12 and 19.

According to the association, there are currently 500,000 migraine sufferers in Ireland, 30,000 of whom suffer from chronic, debilitating headaches for more than 15 days a month.

The self-help group coming to Tallaght aims to support people in managing their migraines while providing them with information, advice and a personal space to ask questions and seek support.

A different topic will be covered in each session, including migraine symptoms, triggers, medications, lifestyle issues, complementary therapies, migraine at work, migraine in children and other headache disorders.

Guest speakers over the course of the three weeks will include Clinical Nurse Specialist Jane Melling from the Migraine Clinic in the Dublin Neurological Institute at the Mater Hospital, who will speak about migraine medication and managing migraines in children and the workplace.

Jane Whelan from Yoga Therapy Ireland will also speak about complementary therapies and how yoga can help people with migraine alongside going through a brief relaxation exercise with the group.

In an attempt to keep the group informal, places in the self-help group, which is open to everybody from the age of 10 years up, are limited.

The event, which runs in the Maldron Hotel on April 5, 12 and 19, is free but registration is essential.
