Minister confirms majority set to get water charge refund this year

Minister for Housing, Planning and Local Government, Eoghan Murphy has confirmed almost all customers will have the full amount they paid for water charges refunded.

Speaking after the first Cabinet meeting since the summer break today he said: “Where circumstances have changed, such as a change of address, there will be an online mechanism to update details.”

He went on to say: “Most refunds will happen automatically by the end of the year. Where there are changed circumstances, refunds will happen in the first quarter of 2018.”

In a further statement the Minister said: “The Joint Oireachtas Committee on the Future Funding of Domestic Water Services recommended equal treatment between those who have paid their water charges to date and those who have not.

“In keeping with the Government’s commitment to implement the committee’s recommendations, the Government will include a provision for refunds in forthcoming legislation, which it is intended to publish shortly.

“Subject to the passage of this legislation, Irish Water will begin an information campaign to inform customers and the public on how the refunds process will work.”

In most cases the refund will happen automatically and no action will be required.

Following the announcement, Solidarity TD Paul Murphy took to Twitter and said: “Protest and boycotts work.

“They said everyone would pay water charges. Instead they have been forced to refund.”
