Molloy playing his part in Ireland’s tenacious run
SUBSTITUTE Joe Doyle fired home an injury time winner for Ireland men’s team in their 2-1 victory over Chinese Taipei in the final Group A match at the World University Games.
The team, which includes Firhouse Clover goalkeeper Ian Molloy had to battle back from a goal down after Chien Hsun Lin had found the back of the net midway through the first half.
Alan O’Sullivan restored parity on 71 minutes before Doyle served up the decisive goal just nine minutes after he had been sprung from the bench.
Ireland started their campaign with a scoreless draw against France, Molloy pulling off a number of saves to help see Greg Yelverton’s side keep a clean sheet.
This was followed up with a narrow 1-0 defeat at the hands of Mexico before their heroic performance on Wednesday set them up for 9-16th Classification match against South Africa tomorrow (Friday).
The Ireland women’s team will face off against Chinese Taipei in their 9-12th place Classification match the day after having battled out a 0-0 draw with Mexico and lost out to Canada 1-0.
Included in Colin Bell’s squad for this tournament are Peamount United players Clare Kinsella, Amber Barrett and Eleanor Ryan-Doyle.
