Motorists warned to slow down this Bank Holiday weekend

Motorists are being advised to take car on the roads this Bank Holiday weekend as increased levels of traffic can be expected on most routes.

Following the deaths of seven road users in the past week, An Garda Siochana and the Road Safety Authority (RSA) renewed their appeal for road safety ahead of the August bank holiday weekend.

To date this year, 95 people have been killed in 88 fatal crashes on Irish roads. This is 16 less when compared to the same period last year, where 111 people were killed in 103 fatal crashes.

Last year two people were killed on Irish roads over the August bank holiday weekend, while there were 166 arrests for drink driving.

The advice from An Garda Siochana and the RSA is a reminder for drivers to never ever drink and drive, following the publication of research showing that 10% of Irish motorists have admitted to driving after consuming alcohol in the past 12 months.

Meanwhile, the AA is calling on drivers to exercise additional caution while driving over the coming days, with an increase in the number of cars on Irish roads expected over the August Bank Holiday weekend.

In addition to an increase in the number of cars on Irish roads, the motoring organisation is also urging motorists to be on the lookout for vulnerable road users, such as cyclists and pedestrians.

With weather conditions expected to remain largely dry over the weekend it’s likely that the numbers of cyclists, pedestrians and motorcyclists on the roads will also increase over the coming days.

Dublin Fire Brigade have also advised motorists to slow down over the weekend, with the emergency service sharing images of a crash in Tallaght yesterday.
