‘Much improved’ performance for Tallaght in IBAL survey
TALLAGHT has been credited with a “much improved performance” in a recent litter survey, where the area was described as moderately littered.
The latest Irish Business Against Litter (IBAL) results were issued this week and, as part of IBAL, An Taisce monitors towns independently and in accordance with international grading standards.
The most recent report marked Tallaght 28 out of 40 towns nationally, showing a notable increase since the last survey in January, where Tallaght was 33 out of 40.
Five locations in Tallaght received the top grade, namely the bus station at The Square, Cheeverstown Road, the civic centre, Tallaght village and West Park.
Tallaght village, which is cleaned weekly by Tallaght Tidy Towns volunteers, was praised in the report for the continued maintenance of the cleanliness of the area.
“The high grade of many previous IBAL surveys has been sustained at Tallaght Village,” according to the report.
“The overall impression was of a well presented and maintained environment. The pavements/road surfaces were clean.”
The bring bank at The Square was awarded grade B+ and was described as “freshly presented”, but missed out on the top grade due to non-recyclable litter left at the site.
“This site would have got the top litter grade if it wasn’t for a few items left by the clothing bin, items listed as ‘not accepted’ for recycling,” stated the report.
Three areas were listed as being seriously littered, including the pedestrian access to Cheeverstown Road from Kilmartin Drive.
Waste ground on Belgard Square East also received the lowest grade due to high levels of littering, as did grassland at Sheehy Skeffington Meadow.
In the report on Sheehy Skeffington Meadow, IBAL wrote: “This site was characterised by recent domestic rubbish dumped on the grasslands next to the wall with Cheeverstown Road.
“Other litter was evident elsewhere. Such sites will only attract further littering/dumping, if not addressed.”
Overall, the report commended “a much-improved performance by Tallaght with six out of the ten survey sites getting the top litter grade.”
