New 1,000-pupil secondary school in Kingswood gets the green light- Again!

PLANNING permission has been granted for a new, 1,000 pupil secondary school in Kingswood, The Echo has learned.
The long-awaited planning application for the development of the secondary school in the Kilnamanagh/Kingswood area was quashed by the council in July after county planners deemed the application invalid, and cited a list of nine errors.
However, a revised application submitted in August was passed by South Dublin County Council this week – subject to 11 conditions.
The permission provides for a 1,000 pupil post-primary school with associated external landscaping, parking and associated pupil drop-off, with 50 to 60 spaces, on a vacant site on Ballymount Road in Kingswood.
Speaking to The Echo, Fianna Fáil councillor Charlie O’Connor said: “The general consensus is positive in relation to the planning permission. This is a good thing for the area and something which was promised and needed.
“However, there are concerns over traffic maintenance and safety, where the pedestrian crossing will be located, access routes and so on.
“There is also an unusual condition cited with the permission, which says that the large playing pitch to the south west of the site shall be for the sole use of the school.
“People are surprised that a playing facility like this cannot be used by other kids and the wider community after school hours, it’s a strange one and it will be raised with the council.”
