New LED lights to be installed across Clondalkin, Lucan and Palmerstown

OVER 1,400 new LED public lights are set to be installed across Clondalkin, Lucan and Palmerstown over the coming months, as part of South Dublin County Council’s LED lighting programme.

The plans will see the lights installed during the remainder of 2016 and into early 2017, with 1,090 lights to be upgraded throughout Lucan and Palmerstown and 322 lights to be upgraded across Clondalkin.

 

1,412 lights overall will be upgraded within all three areas, with further areas in Tallaght to be considered for upgrade following the completion of this phase of the programme.

Some of the estates which will benefit most from the upgrade will be Foxborough (168 lights), Earlsfort (135), Liffey Valley Park (169), Griffeen Glen (175), Westbourne (83) and Grangeview (76).

Other estates that will also see an upgrade to LED lighting include Abbeywood (49), Kennelsfort Green (3), Riversdale (42), Castlegrange (47), Abbeydale (26) and Wheatfields (41).

Mill Court (33), Johnsbridge (61), Palmerstown Park (11), Weston Park (69), Palmers (54), Mount Andrew (75), Colthurst (52) and Whitetorn (43) will also see an upgrade.

The LED lighting programme was first piloted along the Greenhills Road in 2014 at a cost of €290,000, saving the energy consumed by the lights at the location by 59 per cent.

Since then, a five-year programme for the installation of LED lighting around the county has been launched with intentions to help meet energy-saving targets of 33 per cent by 2020.

Almost half of the county’s 30,000 lighting columns need to be replaced at a cost of €2,000 each as part of plans to meet energy-saving targets, with columns needing to be replaced when they hit 25 years of use.

Another saving of €484,000 is expected if all 17,000 public lights in housing estates are replaced from sodium to LED.
