THE new Luas entrance to Tallaght University Hospital opened today, and will be accessible from 6am to 9pm daily.

For a number of years, the community has been waiting for the opening of a new entrance to the health facility from the Hospital Luas platform, which would provide a more direct route into the hospital.

However, despite Tallaght University Hospital receiving planning permission for the development and confirming to The Echo five years ago that works would be completed in September 2013, the entrance remained closed – until this week.

This morning, Wednesday, the new gate was opened in the hope of providing easy access to the hospital for patients and visitors travelling by Luas, especially those who are ill or elderly.

The Echo took a walk through the new entrance, which also has disability access.

In a statement to The Echo, a spokesperson for Tallaght University Hospital said: “The new entrance will provide access from 6am to 9pm and provide quicker access to the hospital for staff, patients and visitors.

“The hospital would like to remind everyone using this entrance that they will need to cross a road after they come in through the gates and to only cross the road at the crossing point.”

The new entrance into the hospital is alongside Pastoral Care – and as you enter the hospital from the new entrance, you turn right and walk to the end of the corridor into the main atrium.

Outside the opening hours of 6am to 9pm, which are subject to review, people are asked to use the main entrance.
