Residents object to new rapid build development

RESIDENTS in Cherry Orchard have rejected proposals for a new rapid build development on green space.
News of the 45 units at Cherry Orchard Gardens were first revealed in The Echo in August, under potential sites for Phase 2 plans of the Rapid-Build Programme.
The proposals gathered further traction in the locality after details were included in a housing report at a Dublin City Council meeting on January 8.
However, with the recent addition of 24 rapid build units at nearby Cherry Orchard Avenue, and work underway for over 120 units at two separate developments in the area, residents say enough is enough, citing the need for services and amenities as a priority for the community.
Residents also feared the loss of another valuable playing space for children.
Sinn Féin Councillor Daithí Doolan, said his party went “door to door” in the area and “only two residents expressed support” for the latest proposal.
“The proposal has been withdrawn,” said Cllr Doolan.
“I’m happy that DCC management listened and responded positively, a good outcome.”
Responding to Cllr Doolan, Brendan Kenny, DCC Deputy Chief Executive, said: “Following further analysis and consideration of the particular site in Croftwood Gardens, we have decided to omit it from the schedule and to leave the site for use as open space by the local community. We are trying to identify a suitable alternative site in the area for rapid build housing.”
