Nine months jail for ‘appalling thuggery’

A THIEF who carried out a series of thefts in Clondalkin has been jailed for nine months by Blanchardstown District Court.
Judge David McHugh described the offences pepetrated by Paul Walsh as “appalling thuggery”.

Walsh, aged 40, with an address at Neilstown Drive, Clondalkin, pleaded guilty to stealing a sat nav and other items worth €350 from a car at Balgaddy Road in Clondalkin on July 1, 2018.
Walsh also pleaded guilty to stealing a De Walt cordless drill worth €184 from B & Q, Liffey Valley, on April 13, 2019.
He also pleaded guilty to stealing electrical goods worth €533.60 from Homebase, Liffey Valley, on July 2, 2019.
A Garda told the court that between 10.30am and 12 noon on July 1, 2018, a car was broken into on the Balgaddy Road and a sat nav and other items were taken from the car. She said that DNA evidence was taken from the car which identified Walsh as the thief.
Sergeant Geraldine McManigan told Judge McHugh that at 4pm on July 2 last, Walsh entered Homebase and selected electrical items worth €533.60. Sgt McManigan said Walsh left without paying for the items and was later identified from CCTV. The court heard that the items had not been recovered.
Sgt McManigan told the court that at 5.30pm on April 13 last, Walsh entered B & Q in Liffey Valley and selected a De Walt cordless drill and left without paying for it. Again, Walsh was later identified by CCTV.
The court heard that Walsh has 39 previous convictions, of which 13 were for theft and one was for burglary.
Walsh’s solicitor, John O’Doherty, said his client had issues with drugs and with alcohol. Mr O’Doherty said Walsh’s mother had died and he wasn’t released from jail to attend her funeral.
Judge McHugh told Mr O’Doherty: “Its appalling thuggery”.
He sentenced Walsh to nine months imprisonment.
