NTA criticises Dunnes plan for Crumlin Shopping Centre

DUNNES Stores’ plans to redevelop Crumlin shopping Centre has been criticized by the National Transport Authority (NTA) over the amount of car parking proposed for the site.

Last month the supermarket retailer lodged plans to redevelop the rundown centre on crumlin Road and create a new anchor unit for a Dunnes Stores outlet, which would include a food market, café, four other retail units, a gym and a library.

The NTA has reviewed the proposals for the Crumlin centre and raised concerns about the “overprovision” of car parking Dunnes Stores has proposed will be included in the redeveloped shopping centre.

It recommended that Dublin City Council consider how the revamped Crumlin Shopping Centre could be a “less car-orientated development”.

In a submission to the local authority, the NTA said the provision of 400 car parking spaces is “significantly in excess” of the 114 maximum number permissible under the Dublin City Development Plan.

It added that Dunnes Stores proposal for the site has no commitment to manage travel behavior through parking fees.

In it’s application, Dunnes said there are currently 500 car parking spaces on the site and used this as the rationale for the 400 spaces requirement.

“The site of the proposed development is close to the city centre, well served by existing public transport, within and cycling distance of a large catchment, and will be served in the future by improved public transport and cycling networks,” said the NTA.

The NTA said the proposed car parking is not compliant with national strategy around reducing car journeys.
