OVER €1,000 was raised for suicide and self-harm charity Pieta House by the residents of Millbrook Manor Nursing Home in Saggart, who held a fundraising day which saw four cyclists cycle 100k on stationary bikes while residents did a pedal cycle, reports Aideen O’Flaherty.

Four men, who are partners of some of the nursing home’s staff, took on the 100k challenge while 40 residents took to their pedal cycles on the day.

A large raffle was also held, while both staff and residents enjoyed music and food on the fundraising day.

Muriel O’Donnell, Millbrook Manor’s director of nursing, told The Echo: “We hadn’t held a fundraiser before for any charity, and after having a residents’ meeting the residents decided they wanted to do something for charity.

“We picked Pieta House because it’s a very important charity at the moment given the high number of suicides in the country.”

Staff and residents donned blue Pieta House t-shirts for the event, while the nursing home was festooned with blue balloons with the charity’s logo.

Ms O’Donnell added: “Obviously the residents can’t take part in Darkness Into Light due to different medical conditions, so it was our way of doing a fundraiser for a good cause.”

The residents where thrilled when they realised that they’d raised over €1,000 for Pieta House, according to Ms O’Donnell, and she said the residents and staff had a very enjoyable day.
