Off duty garda injured during robbery at Rathcoole petrol station

At 4.03pm on Wednesday afternoon Gardaí in Clondalkin received a call that there was a robbery in progress at a Rathcoole service station on the the Naas Road.

A number of units responded to the scene and two males (aged 26 and 36 years) were arrested and were detained at Clondalkin Garda station under the provisions of section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act 1984 as amended.

Both have been charged and will appear before Blanchardstown District Court this morning. 

According to Gardai two males entered the service station with their faces covered.

They were in possession of a knife and threatened staff and demanded money, eventually taking the till drawer and cash.

As they came out of the shop to a waiting car been driven by a third male, they were approached by two off duty Gardaí who identified themselves.

Both Gardaí were threatened with knives and one suspect fled the scene while the second suspect was tackled by the off duty Garda. The off duty Garda received a cut to his arm before the suspect then jumped into the waiting car. 

The two off duty Gardaí were in a position to stop the car from fleeing the scene until local Gardaí attended the scene and arrested both suspects.
