AMAZON have received planning permission from South Dublin County Council to redevelop the former Jacob’s site on Belgard Road.

Plans lodged by Adsil (Amazon Data Services Ireland Limited) for a new data centre include proposals to redevelop the 20,000 sq m former Jacob’s factory building, for electronic operations, mechanical plant rooms and support areas.

The Echo broke previous details of Amazon’s Tallaght investments, including the acquisition of the former Jacob’s factory in July 2015, which had been lying idle since 2008.

This followed the construction of two further Amazon data centres on the Greenhills Road – including the former Tesco warehouse – purchased for €7.5 million in 2011 – and the former Shinko building.

The Belgard data centre will also contain new external plant areas, back-up generators, electrical substations, electrical transformer compound, a security kiosk and 120 car-parking spaces.

Also proposed, are two new vehicular and pedestrian entrances – a main entrance on Airton Road and an emergency entrance at Mayberry Road.

A separate planning application for the demolition of existing buildings at the Belgard site, was granted permission by the council in March.
