On This Day in 1996: Superquinn in Lucan tests out the ‘Super-Scan’
On this day in 1996 the weekly shopping trip was thrown into the future with the introduction of the ‘Super-Scan’ at Superquinn.
The scanner meant there was no more queuing at tills, and those interviewed seemed very impressed.
The hi-tech system was tested out at Superquinn in Lucan where Lorraine Smith demonstrated how it worked and talked to customers about their experiences of using it.
The ‘Super-scan’ device allowed customers to check out their own goods in a D.I.Y. style as they do their shopping.
Superquinn’s Eamonn Quinn said that the system was based on the trust of their customers to a certain extent. However, random checks would take place from time to time.
