Over 5,000 on list for one or two-bed homes
By Maurice Garvey
OVER 5,000 people are on a housing waiting list for either one or two-bed accommodation.
There are 2,630 applications on South Dublin County Council’s social housing waiting list with a need for one-bed accommodation – of these 181 are older persons.
Up to 2,751 people are on the list requesting two-bed accommodation.
Meanwhile, following a review of the transfer list in April, South Dublin County Council say there are currently 56 tenants who have been approved for a transfer on downsizing grounds.
The majority of the 56 tenants who applied for downsizing, have moved to a one-bed apartment, with five tenants moving to either a three- or four-bed housing unit.
Independent councillor Francis Timmons, who recently asked the council how they will meet demand for downsizing, has welcomed proposals for a social housing development of 44 units at New Nangor Road.
The site is bounded by Riversdale Estate and Mayfield Park and contains 19 three-bed homes and 24 two-bed apartments, with one specially adapted unit.
Encourage all concerned residents to submit their views
Councillor Timmons said: “I am particularly happy that there are 24 two-beds. I welcome the move to propose social housing and would encourage all concerned residents to submit their views in the form of a written submission during the consultation stage.
“We have a desperate need for housing and these units could help 44 families.”
The proposed scheme will be available for inspection for a period of six weeks from July 19, at the offices of South Dublin County Council offices in Tallaght and Clondalkin.
