Over 5,000 spill onto village streets for cultural festival
THOUSANDS spilled out into the streets of the prehistoric village of Lucan, as part of a festival designed to celebrate its rich culture and heritage.
Back in full-flow, not even the spurts of rain could turn festivalgoers away as Lucan Festival catered for at least 5,000 people across the five-days of events.
Organisers cultivated a jam-packed schedule of events taking place not only in the village, but in different hotspots in the surrounding community.
Kicking off with historical walks and talks, Lucan Festival got into full swing on Friday night after upwards of 240 schoolchildren discussed school life today with the older generations.
Friday night was a blockbuster, attracting thousands of people to the Lucan Weir viewing point to see the spectacular fireworks display, which could also be seen for miles around.
On the Saturday, the grounds of Lucan House, which is where the Italian Embassy is located, was open to the public with more than 2,500 adults and children stopping by.
There was an opportunity to visit the 1770s house and Sarsfield monument while there was a vintage horse carriage and entertainment from the Lucan Gospel Choir and Lucan Concert Band among others.
Also, members of the Society of Old Lucan were on location to give festivalgoers nuggets of information while demonstrations and sculptures were also on the grounds.
On the Sunday, the village closed for traffic to accommodate the big family fun day, with dozens of stalls set up, a stage, road train, pet farm and duck race among among the other happenings.
After being captured by the sun in the first days, Sunday was a different story as the festival had to deal with rainshowers and a thunderstorm warning.
However, this did not deter families, groups and residents and they came out in droves to support the festival and the local traders.
Save for two Covid years, this iteration of the Lucan Festival has been going since 2004 and the organisers fully intend on delivering another jam[1]packed schedule for the 20th anniversary in 2024.
