Over €8 million allocated towards ‘Letts’ social housing construction

UP TO €8,400,000 has been allocated towards the construction of 37 social houses in Letts Field, Clondalkin.
The funds are part of a €182 million capital project package announced this week by Environment Minister Alan Kelly for the delivery of approximately 1,000 new social housing units around the country.
Following extensive consultation between South Dublin County Council and local residents, it was agreed last September to drop the number of proposed houses on the Letts Field site from 48 to 37.
Residents feared the development would lead to the loss of valuable amenity space which is used by kids, football clubs and people walking dogs.
A petition was started in the community by residents, citing a potential impact on privacy and disruption to St Peter Apostle junior and senior schools.
Along with the reduction of houses, the revised plans saw the development layout altered to increase privacy for residents and minimise disruption to adjacent schools, with a junior pitch and playground to be included in the scheme.
Sinn Féin councillor Eoin Ó Broin, who conducted an extensive survey in the community regarding the plans with party colleague Jonathan Graham, said the final proposal “deals with concerns” of residents.
He cited the urgent need for homes with “over 1,000 families in North Clondalkin on the housing list.”
The Letts Field site will see the development of 11 three-bed units, 22 three-bed units and three specially adapted dormer bungalow units.
Minister Kelly said the funding has created “a strong pipeline of new local authority-led construction projects, which I have prioritised as a key part of the medium and long-term response to social housing delivery.”
