PERMISSION is being sought for the demolition of the fire damaged Safa Foods unit in Cookstown Industrial Estate.

The industrial fire happened last November, as eight Dublin Fire Brigade units including two aerial appliances worked hard to bring the blaze under control.

Cookstown Fire 05 1

Safa Foods have lodged an application to demolish the building in Cookstown following the blaze in November

All nearby buildings were evacuated and people were asked to close windows because the strong overhead winds spread the smoke across a wide area.

Rightstyle Furniture in Belgard Retail Park had to shut their doors as a result, while Halfords temporarily shut.

In a statement posted on Facebook shortly after the fire, Safa Foods said: “It is with great sadness that we must inform you that our Cookstown premises burnt down last night.

“We would like to express our gratitude to the fire brigade for their brave and tireless work.

“Thankfully, nobody was hurt in the fire.

“Our immediate priority is the well-being of our staff – some of whom have stood with us since the very beginning.

“We count ourselves lucky working with such great men and women and we will do everything in our power to support them in the wake of this horrible event.

“To all the people who reached out to us privately, we appreciate the concern and your well wishes.

“Together we’ll get through this.”

A decision on the application for the demolition of the unit is due from South Dublin County Council by April 11.

Safa Foods, based in Greenhills, is a family owned and operated bakery serving the food service industry, wholesale and retail.
