Post office closure ‘is beyond our control’
By Mary Dennehy
THE post office in Templeogue village has ‘temporarily’ ceased operations due to the closing of local shop Daybreak this Friday, July 27.
An Post this week confirmed that, due to circumstances beyond its control, the Templeogue Post Office was closing temporarily – with their Department of Employment Affairs and Social protection (DEASP) customers transferred to Greenlea Road Post Office.

However, The Echo has learned that the Daybreak store in Templeogue village, which is home to the post office, is closing this Friday.
When contacted by The Echo, a spokeswoman for Musgrave, which is behind the Daybreak brand, said: “We regret to confirm that Daybreak Templeogue is due to close on Friday.”
The closure of Daybreak has left the post office in search of a new home, with a spokesman for An Post telling The Echo how they hope to get the post office back up and running as soon as possible.
In a statement from An Post, a spokesman said: “Due to circumstances beyond our control Templeogue Post Office will close temporarily [with effect from Tuesday, July 24].
“Department of Employment Affairs and Social Protection customers will be transferred to Greenlea Road Post Office for service, which is circa two kilometres distance from Templeogue Post Office.
“DEASP customers who wish to use an alternative post office can do so by making an application to the relevant DEASP scheme office.”
He added: “All other post offices will continue to be available in other neighbouring offices in the area, mainly Terenure and Rathfarnham.
Circumstance beyond our control
“Apologies to customers for the inconvenience, but we would stress that this closure was due to circumstance beyond our control.”
Local Fianna Fáil TD for Dublin South West, John Lahart has called on An Post to move as quickly as possible to identify an alternative location within Templeogue village for a new post office.
According to Deputy Lahart: “An Post management need to move as quickly as possible and make good on their commitment to ensure that the temporary closure of the existing Post Office in Templeogue, is temporary, and that a replacement location be identified as soon as is practicable.
“People in Templeogue should not have to put up with much reduced postal services.
“I will continue discussions with An Post on this issue to ensure an alternative location is secured within Templeogue village for a new post office.”
