Post office set to become ‘contract run operation’

THE post office in the Square Shopping Centre will become a “contractor-run operation” in the coming weeks – and it will not close, despite rumours to the contrary.

Readers have contacted The Echo in recent days expressing concerns about the rumoured closure of the facility.

However, an An Post spokesperson told The Echo this week that they were “happy to discount” the rumoured closure of the post office in the Square, but it will not be directly run by An Post anymore.

The new system means that the post office will no longer be directly run by An Post and will instead be led by a postmaster, but it will have no effect on the services that are being offered to customers.

According to the An Post spokesperson, the change means the Tallaght post office will “join the mainstream of national post offices of which more than 95 per cent of the country’s 900 plus offices which are run by contractors.

“Less than 40 post offices nationally are run directly by An Post.

“The move represents a significant business opportunity for a newly appointed postmaster.

“The change in business model of the offices will not in any way change the range or extent of the services offered by An Post.

“We remain committed to providing our customers with the highest level of services for the future.

“Changing the business model of a post office does not impact on the level or variety of services which are available to customers.

“Continuation of service is of key importance to An Post. All services available before the change remain available after the change.

“In addition, in many cases the premises and facilities available have been improved. We will continue to provide a top-class service.

“An Post staff formerly employed there will take up a number of possible options, including taking up employment for the new Postmaster or being redeployed within the An Post network.”

However, it was noted that a new location could be sought by the new postmaster in a nearby location but the service would not cease.
