‘Protected’ Esker church to be assessed for future upkeep

SOUTH DUBLIN County Council are to assess the future maintenance and upkeep of the Old Esker church in Lucan.

At lastweek’s Lucan-area meeting of SDCC, Councillor Ed O’Brien tabled a motion that, noting the work being carried out at King John’s Bridge as part of the €300k Have Your Say programme, this area committee “calls on the Chief Executive to carry out cleansing and ancillary environmental works at the Old Church in ruins at Esker Glebe as an extension of a future heritage trail.”

The council replied that the Old Church at Esker Glebe is listed as a Protected Structure in the County Development Plan 2016-2022.

It is identified as Esker Church and described as a “stone church (Ruin), Monument and Graveyard (RM)”. The RM denotes that it is a recorded monument.

The Council added: “The Public Realm Section will liaise with the Council’s Conservation Officer in relation to assessing the site with a view to determining the most appropriate course of action for the future maintenance and upkeep of the Protected Structure”.
