Remembering the leaders – Local youths take part in street art programme commemorating Easter Rising

STREET art commemorating the Easter Rising leaders and significant individuals involved in the historic period of Irish history, will decorate Ballyfermot Road in the lead up to Easter.
Members of Ballyfermot Youth Service took part in an extensive project over the last year to create visually impressive street banners for a 'Remembering the Leaders' initiative.
BYS launched the exhibition at Ballyfermot Library on Monday, and it will be on display in the library until the end of May.
Italian graphic artist Robetto Tusa, from Tortona, helped youths in BYS piece together their designs.
Robetto is a European Volunteer on an Erasmus programme with BYS, and he worked with the youths to create their street banners.
Youths picked three words that resonated with them from the Proclamation of the Irish Republic, and incorporated this on their banner.
Gerry McCarthy, Manager BYS said: “Each young person’s task was to decide on the leader they identified with.
They looked at the words in the proclamation and picked three words that represented their ideas and vision about this revolutionary period and what it meant to them as young people in today’s Ireland.”
He continued: “They then incorporated these words together with their own photo alongside the image of the leaders. The images are printed on large polyboards and create an explosion of colour and imagination. In addition to the exhibition, street banners will also display the images on the main shopping street in Ballyfermot.”
Up to 20 youths took part in the programme, and with the help and guidance of Tusa, they have constructed a fabulous art design, which will add a fair bit of colour to the Ballyfermot landscape over the coming weeks.
Dublin City Mayor Críona Ní Dhálaigh was amongst the local representatives who attended the launch on Monday evening at Ballyfermot Library.
