Repeated acts of vandalism causes footpath repairs to be postponed for safety reasons

ALL works on footpath repairs on Homelawn Road in Tallaght have been postponed by South Dublin County Council due to repeated instances of vandalism.

On the nights of Monday, September 18, and the following Monday, September 25, equipment belonging to council staff was set alight.

Last Thursday morning, a council spokesperson confirmed to The Echo that works had been postponed as staff had concerns for their safety.

“Road Maintenance had their materials (timber, cones and barriers) vandalised in Homelawn Road on the nights of Monday 18 and Monday, September 25,” stated the spokesperson.

“The crew, having made the site safe, has postponed all works there.

“There are three weeks’ work left to complete the footpath works in this area.

“SDCC Road Maintenance may return at a future date to complete the works, but have safety concerns for their staff and equipment.”

Speaking to The Echo last week, local Fianna Fáil councillor Teresa Costello described the vandalism as “so unnecessary” and said it was delaying the council’s work.

As reported in The Echo last January, the council had set aside a budget of €40,000 to carry out footpath repairs in Homelawns Estate.
