Residents play pivotal role in community drugs work

By Mary Dennehy

LOCAL people frustrated by drug dealing or drug related crime who feel they could work as part of a team to build safer communities are invited to attend a Tallaght Drugs and Alcohol Task Force information meeting on October 5.

The Tallaght Drugs and Alcohol Task Force (TDATF) is recruiting new community representatives across the areas of Tallaght and Whitechurch, two communities which have over the years seen residents play a pivotal role in community drug work – with many of the existing community drug projects being established by local people.

In celebration of its 20th anniversary, the TDATF is acknowledging the contribution community representatives have made to the task force since its inception in 1997 and are actively recruiting new reps to build on the work done to date.

As part of its birthday celebrations, the TDATF is also providing an opportunity for existing community representatives to reflect on their own contribution and participation, with a history of community reps, their legacy and participation on the task force also being documented.

The madate, role and criteria for community representatives going forward will also be drawn up.

As the TDATF looks forward to the next two decades, an information evening for anybody interested in becoming a community representative is being staged in the Maldron Hotel, Tallaght, on October 5.

The task force is looking for people who may be frustrated by drugs or drug related crime in their area and who feel they could represent the voice and needs of their community.

Those with a view on drug or alcohol misuse and related issues may also be interested in the role.

Full training and support will be given and sessions with old and new reps are also in the pipeline.

An open invitation has been extended to those living in Tallaght and Whitechurch to attend the information evening, which will provide an opportunity to learn about TDATF and its work, meet current community representatives, learn about the role and the supports available and meet likeminded people from your community over a cup of tea and some nibbles.

The information evening will be held on Thursday, October 5, in the Maldron Hotel from 7.30pm.
