Residents ‘pulling hair out’ over bonfire issues
By Aideen O'Flaherty
KILNAMANAGH residents are “pulling their hair out” in frustration at ongoing issues with the stockpiling of bonfire materials on the ring road, according to a councillor.
Materials, including tyres, have been stockpiled alongside a dividing wall between Kilnamanagh and the M50 in recent days, and Labour councillor for Tallaght Central, Mick Duff, is appealing to parents and local business owners to ensure their rubbish is disposed of properly.
Cllr Duff said: “People in Kilnamanagh are pulling their hair out about the stockpiling of bonfire material along the ring road at Tamarisk – it’s a cause of great aggravation in the area.
“I’m appealing to parents and companies in the area to make sure no material is moved from the front of their premises or from skips.
“There needs to be a wake-up call, and we need to make sure that households do not hand over materials [to people who are stockpiling material for bonfires].
“I’m asking people to let the council know if they see material being stockpiled, and the council will remove it.”
Last October, South Dublin County Council recorded 388 bonfires in the county, and from mid-October through to Halloween the council was notified of approximately 300 locations where stockpiling for bonfires was occurring.
The local authority spent €87,000 cleaning damage caused by bonfires last Halloween.
In a bid to combat the issue of illegal bonfires, the council started a Bulbs not Bonfires project last year, where communities that organise pro-environmental and non-bonfire orientated activities will be rewarded with daffodil bulbs for the spring.
Anyone can report the illegal stockpiling of bonfire material by contacting the council on 01 414 9000.
