A local theatre company will be bringing murder and mystery to Tallaght this September.

Blackbird Theatre will be performing ROPE, the play that inspired Alfred Hitchcock’s film of the same name.

“This production is chock-full of mystery, fraud, thrill and suspense,” producer Emma O’Brien said. “It will make you question society’s morals, values and people’s statuses within that society and community.”

The group has been working hard at bringing the production to life.

“The idea of ROPE was born about six months ago,” said O’Brien. “After watching the film adaptation of the same name by Alfred Hitchcock, we were inspired to bring it to stage.

“We have been rehearsing now for about six weeks. As we are a social drama group and the actors have other commitments, we meet once or twice a week to rehearse. However, as show days draw closer this will increase to three or four times a week.”

According to O’Brien, the audience should also be expecting intense characters and an intriguing storyline. “Each character in ROPE plays a vital part in the storyline, so looking into what they say, when they say it, why they say it and how they say it makes the whole process very interesting.”

Blackbird Theatre has been running for five years, and was created soon after director Helen Hannon staged her first piece, Someone Who’ll Watch Over Me, with Run Rabbit Theatre. In the five years, Blackbird Theatre has produced The Plough and The Stars, The Importance of Being Earnest and From Both Hips.

ROPE will be on at the Civic Theatre on Friday, September 13. Tickets start from €15 and are available on the Civic’s website or at the box office.
