Rovers televised game to go ahead in Tallaght
Shamrock Rovers have today released a statement addressing their future relationship with national broadcasters, confirming the club will allow RTE to televise their meeting with Sligo Rovers next Friday, September 13, in Tallaght, reports James Ffrench.
The statement from the club read: “After much media coverage and recent debate, a meeting was convened and attended by Shamrock Rovers F.C, RTÉ TV Sport and the FAI in relation to National TV coverage of Irish football, with particular reference to recent European ties.
“Following the meeting between the three parties, we can confirm that progress has been made in regard to having a clearer transparency of the perspectives of each party in relation to broadcast TV coverage of Irish teams in European competitive tournaments and, of our domestic league.”
“It was a productive meeting; a professional, informative and respectful sharing of views which allowed all parties understand clearly the realities facing each other.
“The expectation is that, with the strategic input of the FAI, media broadcasters and critically, the professional football clubs, this will result in the continual improvement of TV coverage of Irish football teams across the football season.
“Shamrock Rovers look forward to the broadcast of our next fixture against Sligo Rovers live on RTÉ2 on the 13th of September from Tallaght Stadium.”
Rovers have played eight games in total in European competition this season with not one of those games picked up by a national broadcaster.
This had led to the club releasing a statement criticising RTE’s decision to not televise any of their European fixtures, with Rovers revealing in the statement they were “considering if it will facilitate any future requests from the National broadcaster to show SSE Airtricity Premier Division fixtures from Tallaght Stadium in 2024”.
Rovers will play a minimum further six games in European competition this season following qualification for the UEFA Conference League, with the four in a row champions hosting Apoel Nicosia at Tallaght Stadium on the 3rd October in their opening fixture.
