Rovers U17 women’s find the Range in the Super Cup
IT was all smiles for Shamrock Rovers U17s WNL Team after they secured the Super Cup NI Vase Trophy in Newtownabbey last week.
It was the first time that a Rovers women’s team won a trophy in this competition and the first time that the club ever played Scottish side Rangers.
The Tallaght side turned on the style in the final, wining out 3-0, with international players Robyn Gleeson and Sorcha Melia both on the scoresheet.
The deadlock was broken mid-way through the half when Rovers won a free kick and up stepped Gleeson who let fly a cracking effort to the back of the net.
With chances hard to come by, the second goal did not arrive until the second half when the same player scored a brilliant long-range effort.
The contest was wrapped up five minutes from time when Sorcha Melia found a way through the Rangers defence to guide the ball to the back of the net.
It was a great win for this young Rovers team who will certainly have benefited from the experience of the competition having played Northern Ireland in their first game, Surf Select from America and Shelbourne in the early matches.
“We are delighted with the win, it’s a great boost for this side and hopefully we can build on this,” said Rovers coach Keith Coffey who runs the side with Terry Gleeson, Jessica Turner and Rovers senior player Melissa O’Kane.
Rovers have plenty of experience in their side including internationals Kayla Maguire, Lauryn McCabe, Sorcha Melia, Robyn Gleeson, Amy Tierney, Katie O’Reilly and keeper Laura Fanning and they will be hoping to build on this success.
Rovers are playing in Tier One in the Women’s National League having already beat DLR 3-2 and lost to Galway 3-1.
