Saoirse refuge celebrates ten years of helping women and children

SAOIRSE Women’s Refuge in Tallaght celebrated their 10-year anniversary on Wednesday, July 26, with a family fun day for current and past residents and their children.

The refuge opened in 2006 after 12 years of tireless work; it was much needed, considering that there were only two other refuges for women and children in the Dublin/Wicklow/ Kildare area at the time— and there are only four now.

The family day was attended by more than 100 people: current and former residents and their children, board members both past and present, and staff, most of whom have remained over the past 10 years.

There was face-painting, ice cream, a visit from Kinsealy Pet Store, and the decoration of the playroom’s “Tree of Life” with fingerprints.

Staff member Orla Kelly said: “The event went really well, there was a great turnout and everyone enjoyed themselves.

“The event was fully funded by the refuge, which relies on fundraising and donations to stay open.”

Since 2006, Saoirse has hosted more than 1,200 women and countless children in their six-unit accommodations in Tallaght.

Their mission is to combat the crime of domestic abuse by providing a safe, supportive and confidential environment through temporary accommodation, a helpline and an outreach service for women and children.

Their helpline is available 24 hours per day, seven days per week, and they offer outreach, court accompaniment, and childcare as well.
