School car raffle helps to fund a new Astro pitch for the students

A LUCKY parent won a brand new car last week in a raffle held to fund a new Astro pitch at Old Bawn Community School.

Sarah Jane King, whose sons Matthew and Jack Pike attend Old Bawn CS, was announced as the winner of the Toyota Aygo car at the launch of the new pitch last Wednesday, September 27.

The car was the grand prize of the raffle, which saw other winners receive €3,000, and a Shamrock Rovers’ family season ticket.

The money from the raffle has been used to fund the new Astro pitch which was installed in the grounds of the school over the summer, in place of an old basketball court.

The principal of Old Bawn CS, Ursula McCabe, told The Echo: “We had an Astro pitch put in over the summer. We had no playing facilities before that.

“Now we look like a proper school with proper facilities – we had nowhere to train before, or to do PE outside.”

The students are delighted with the new pitch, according to Ms McCabe, and it is used on a daily basis for outdoor PE classes.

Reflecting on the success of the raffle fundraiser, Ms McCabe said: “Thank you to everyone who rallied around and supported us, and to our main sponsor Tadhg Riordan Motors.

“We’re delighted with the support we got from all of our parents and past pupils.”
