LOCAL schoolchildren presented the manager of the Lidl on Fortunestown Lane with letters about the store and how much they miss it, and a bouquet of flowers, last week in recognition of the positive impact the store has had on their school and their area.

Scoil Aoife Community National School, which is located directly across the road from the Lidl store which was looted after a stolen digger was used to demolish the shop during the heavy snowfall earlier this month, were on the receiving end of a donation of fruit from the German discount store late last month.

The fruit was donated to the school as part of a dissertation that was being carried out by Ms Robinson, a student teacher in the school, which looked at implementing a ‘whole school’ approach to healthy eating.

A colourful variety of fruit, including apples, bananas, pears, grapes, pineapples, kiwis and melons, were donated to the school which led to some of the young pupils getting to taste some fruits that they didn’t even know existed, and the staff and students were grateful for Lidl’s donation of the fruit.

Sarah O’Reilly, a teacher in Scoil Aoife, told The Echo: “No words can describe how devastating the [effects of] recent events at Lidl have had on the school community.

“The children, the staff and the parents, all of whom shopped in the Lidl store on a daily basis, are still in shock and disbelief.

“Therefore, Scoil Aoife Community National School did not want to let Lidl’s generosity go unnoticed and we invited Ruth, the manager of Lidl Fortunestown Lane, into our school.”

A big thank-you to Lidl from the pupils of Scoil Aoife

Ruth visited the school last Friday and was presented with letters from Ms Duffy’s senior infants class outlining how much they miss the shop, and the store manager also received pictures from the fruit tasting day which was held in the school using the donated fruit from Lidl.

Ruth was also given flowers and a card from the school community as a way of saying thank you for Lidl’s generous donation of fruit and their involvement in the community.

Lidl recently announced that plans for a new and improved, larger store at the Fortunestown Lane site will be going ahead, with the new store expected to be open to the public by late summer.
