Scotty B – Civic show on Saturday, October 20th

Growing up in Jobstown can be challenging at times, but for 15-year-old Scott Boylan he just wants to put his message out there for people his age to listen to and believes that you can do anything that you put your mind to.
Scott Boylan aka ‘Scotty B’, has been performing since the age of 10, and has recently put the wheels in motion to record a debut EP after booking himself his first ever headline gig in The Civic Theatre next month.
Scotty B has a notebook of songs ready for his EP, and hopes to have a 6 song EP wrapped up by the time sixth year comes around, having recently started fifth year in St Aidan’s Community School.
Scotty B caught up with The Echo recently ahead of his gig to tell us about the message he wants to spread, what made him get into rapping, and what we can expect from him next.
How would you describe your music style?
I’ve been performing since I’m 10 in front of friends and family and then I did my first performance in front of an audience when I was 13 in my school, St. Aidan’s.
I’d say I’m more on the lyrical side of rap because I really want to be able to spread a message to people my age through my music.
What is that message?
Times may be hard right now but keep on top of them and never give up. Nowadays life is taken over by social media and it can become negative, but I want to show that if you can put your mind to something that you can achieve it and I want my rap to be able to spread those messages.
What made you want to start performing?
I went to a few rap battles that where being run by my aunty, Kim Marie, and I was just hooked at how they use their lyrics to express themselves.
The way they use the words was just so entertaining, and I was really hooked on their words straight away.
So, that would have inspired me to want to get involved in this and that’s where I started off – as a battle rapper. I’m actually the youngest battle rapper in Ireland at the moment, and seeing other battle rappers around Dublin performing has inspired me to keep battle rap alive.
When was the first time you performed in front of an audience and what was that like?
I was 13 at the time and it felt weird because I was always the quiet one in school and wouldn’t talk a lot.
When I started rapping it gave me a voice and I found my purpose in school – to entertain people through my rap. Every year in my school we perform at the variety show with The Civic and Rua Red and I’ve performed at a few of those.
I then formed a rap group called Savoy with a few friends, but we split up after awhile and I kind of fell out of rapping.
Then my aunty called me and got me back into it and told me to never give up – and it’s been all the way up for me since, I even released my first single “Raindrop”.
On your music playlist on your phone, who would be the most played artist?
Right now, it would be Logic and the most played song would probably be his song ‘1800’, the suicide prevention song.
He is a lyrical rapper who doesn’t sing about the usual rap things like crime, and isn’t about drugs but I found him on YouTube after a friend recommended him to me and I couldn’t believe I hadn’t heard of him before that.
He’s clean and fast, and he speaks about real stuff that’s not on the telly or in the media.
You’re making an EP?
Yeah, I recorded my first single last year and I had to go down to Laois to record it because my aunt knew a producer down there,
Pedro Martin, who gave us a good deal because I wouldn’t have the money to be recording in Dublin. I went down with my mam and we went into the studio and started working from there.
Once I found a beat that I liked, I was able to match the lyrics and then I went into the booth to record, I’d say we spent about three or four hours there recording.
What way is the show going to play out?
I sacrificed a lot to get this show done and I even fell out with some people because I made my music my priority. I’ve worked very hard to make sure this works out and I really do look forward to the show.
