Scrambler and quads forum to meet for first time

A SCRAMBLER and quads forum, which will contain representatives from the four Dublin local authorities and gardai, is due to meet up for the first time on June 21.

The forum will meet at South Dublin County Council offices.

Independent Cllr Francis Timmons says it is a regional forum, which could lead to positive changes down the line for an issue prevalent in numerous communities.

“There is no point in SDCC trying to deal with the problem alone when it is Dublin-wide,” said Cllr Timmons.

“The only way we can progress is if the four local authorities are involved. I am representing SDCC as I suggested setting it up. I’m on a Dublin regional horse forum and we have made some progress in that area.

“Sometimes long meetings are the way to make progress. People sitting around a table, someone mentions a good idea and you run with it.”

Timmons feels education and change to existing legislation is key to addressing the problem.

Current garda policy is that they will not give chase to young lads on quads or scramblers, in case there is an accident.

Irresponsible

Cllr Timmons continued: “I would love to bring in Headway, to show kids the type of injuries they risk on bikes, particularly with no helmets. A parent buying their kid a bike for communion is just irresponsible.

“Something has to happen but education needs to be part of it. Scramblers and quads are going to be around – we need a solution.”
