SDCC to contact gardai in relation to anti-social reports at Tymon Park

THERE has been no let up in anti-social behaviour at Tymon Park since The Echo reported of large gatherings of youths at the National Basketball Arena last week.
A video of a gang of nine teenagers targeting and assaulting a man in Tymon Park has been circulating on social media. The attack is believed to have happened on Sunday, February 14.

The man said to be in his 20’s was victim to an unprovoked attack from the gang while out for a jog.
In an effort to prevent this type of behaviour, at a Tallaght Area Committee Meeting on February 22, Councillor Mick Duff called for the closure of the pedestrian gates at the entrance to the Arena Road, for the duration of the Level 5 restrictions.
The council said in response to Cllr Duff’s question: “It is not proposed to close off these routes as they are widely used, with the level of usage having increased during Covid restrictions.
“Contact will be made with staff from the basketball arena and with the local community Gardai to see how this matter can be addressed, however gatherings of the size described here are clearly in breach of Covid restrictions and for the Gardai to address in the appropriate manner.”
As reported in The Echo last week, there have been large groups of up to 70 people gathering at Tymon Park and The National Basketball Arena engaging in anti-social behaviour every Friday and Saturday night.
“They gather and they leave empty bottles and empty cans. They are coming down on the bus and they are bringing their bags with bottles and cans. We know they are coming from Killinarden and Kiltipper and further afield.
“One of the founding members of The Friends of Tymon Park showed me photographs of the amount of bottles he had cleaned up from Tymon Lane over the weekend, the laneway within the park itself near the Rangers Depot.
“It is prolific at the moment, and I know the Guards are stretched but someway or another we will have to make access into the park over the weekend. It is a destination area, people from all around come in and enjoy it.” Cllr Duff said.
