Serial thief with 168 previous convictions took pair of Ray Ban sunglasses from vehicle

A SERIAL thief received a two-month concurrent sentence for theft of a pair of Ray Ban sunglasses from a vehicle.

Gary Herbert (43) with an address of Kilcarrig Green, Tallaght, appeared before Tallaght District Court in custody, to face a theft charge.

The court heard gardai were contacted by an injured party on September 9, 2024, in relation to their vehicle being interfered with in the early hours of the morning at Ballyroan Crescent, Rathfarnham.

A pair of Ray Bans were taken from the vehicle.

CCTV footage identified Mr Herbert, who was subsequently arrested on November 27, 2024.

Mr Herbert has 168 previous convictions, 63 of which are theft related.

He is currently serving a sentence for seperate offences and due for release in August 2026.

Defence solicitor John O’Leary acknowledged his client has a poor record but requested leniency from the court and no extension to his current sentence.

Judge Karen Dowling imposed a two-month concurrent sentence.
