Sewage stench still lingers around home
By Maurice Garvey
BLOCKED sewage pipes caused havoc for a Ballyfermot family who say their back garden is destroyed and a foul stench has lingered in the home.
The Best family have lived in Convent Lawns since 1998 but say “ongoing” blockages are causing health and safety problems with the back garden seeped in human waste and fears the problem could occur again.
Dublin City Council engineers were out to fix the leak last weekend after the family’s daily efforts to resolve the problem lasted up to 10 days.
The home is located on the corner of the estate, sewerage from other houses runs through and out pipes in the back garden of the Best’s.
Lindsey Best Kinsella, daughter of the house’s tenants Eileen and Eugene Best, said the trauma caused severe difficulty for her elderly parents – her father bruising a leg as he tried to wash away the waste and her mother fainting and breaking her nose.
Lindsey said: “It was coming from shores across the road. Workers found baby wipes and rags in the pipes. They said they will monitor the problem, but I am holding them responsible for the health and safety of my family.
“Waste has seeped into the grass. It needs to be dug out and concrete laid down. Because if it happens again – and it’s happened three times now – you need to Dettol it and hose it down.
Palmerstown Woods resident Lindsey is mother of Tristan Best Kinsella (3), who has Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome (HLHS) and is on daily medication.
Lindsey continued: “My parents mind my son at the house up to six days a week, but this poses a serious health and safety risk.”
