Silver Surfers showcase their snooker skills at ‘Super Classic’

Eight members of Silver Surfers’ active retirement group, with a combined age of 627, showcased their skills in their annual “Super Classic” Snooker Challenge.

The two-day tournament came back for its fourth year and was held at the Roadstone Social Club.

Pierce Ennis (72), John Murphy (73), Tony Kenny (76), John O’Connor (78), Brendan Murphy (77), John Cleaver (83), Brian Merriman (83) and James Donnelly (85) battled through the first round, quarter-final and semi-final stages, on Tuesday, September 3.

All of them contributed to a fun-to-watch competition, with John Murphy amazing the crowd with a proper draw shot, but there was room for two players only at the final.

Three exciting frames on Thursday, September 5 saw John O’Connor earning this year’s victory after playing last year’s winner, and six years younger, Pierce Ennis.

Silver Surfers is an active retirement group in St Mark’s, made up of over 100 women and about 40 men with a four-figure combined age.

Members engage in several fun activities at the St Mark’s GAA Club, such as Keep Fit, Choral singing, Dancing, and Indoor Bowls, every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday.

The group is always open to new people, who could make the overall combined age higher and the fun greater.

The Snooker Challenge players are part of the pool team. On a Monday morning and afternoon, they enjoy playing pool and honing their skills to eventually become the annual tournament’s winners.
