Slade ladies land another McKenna Cup

THE ladies of Slade Valley Golf Club enjoyed, yet again, the sweet taste of victory after they won the Mary McKenna Cup for the second time in three years in Woodenbridge Golf Club last weekend.

This All-Ireland competition saw the provincial winners gather at the Wicklow venue for the semis and final, played in scotch foursomes format.

In the semi-final on Saturday, Slade defeated the Ulster champions, Malone, with the deciding match won on the 19th . The winning pair of Jo Clarke and Anne McNamara came from two down playing the 17th to clinch the match.

The final on Sunday saw them face the Connacht champions Ballinrobe who had beaten East Clare.

And it proved as exciting as the semis with all matches closely contested. However Slade’s experience at this level proved decisive.

Led by manager Cather-ine Dunne they won 3-2.

The Slade panel were; Geraldine Mullaney, Marie Murran, Alice Galloway, Helen Goodall, Jo Clarke, Anne McNamara, Noreen O’Grady, Betty McCabe, Dympna Wilson, Christina Egan, Frances Mc Hugh, Mary Winters, Pat McDonagh, Mary O’Neill and Denise Campbell.
